That means that I use phrases, and entertain arguments, that I would probably not use in private conversation or correspondence.

There is also the question of use of irony. Sometimes a criticism is all the more devastating for being delicately phrased, or understated.Edward Lucashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11369936559712607693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24528000.post-1165063790828074992006-12-02T12:49:00.000+00:002006-12-02T12:49:00.000+00:00Ah yes, the French. Horrifying is more like it, horrifying in the same way that their surrender to Hitler was horrifying. In light of recent events involving Russia, this meeting should simply not have been possible. It makes it seem that France, despite its EU pretensions, bears Europe a considerable amount of ill will and is prepared to sacrifice Europe to some benighted view of Greater France.

And I'm not sure I care for your term "paranoid" in regard to the Baltics, either. In fact, I think that the Baltic attitude towards Russia is more than justified, and in fact that some of their leaders are not being nearly aggressive enough. Anyone who knows Russia knows that it wants them back and would be prepared to go to great lengths to get them back. Litivenko type lengths. In fact, I'm not entirely sure it's possible to be paranoid where Russia is concerned. After all, who predicted that Russians would elect and re-elect a proud KGB spy so soon after that entity destroyed the country? Had we been more "paranoid" we might have been in a better position to deal with that charming development.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
