I am a journalist which means sometimes I write reporting pieces (describing what's going on) sometimes analysis (explaining what does it mean) and sometimes opinion pieces (what do I think of it). Sometimes the same piece has several elements, but I think it is easy for anyone reading to see

regardsEdward Lucashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11369936559712607693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24528000.post-30249124592988691492007-07-06T04:29:00.000+00:002007-07-06T04:29:00.000+00:00Anyway, it's great that you are contributing to Di...Anyway, it's great that you are contributing to Diplomaatia. I read the Lennart Meri issue and it was very well put together. Some foreign policy journals/magazines are fit for the 'ahi' compared to Diplomaatia, though, knowing Estonia, a few copies might wind up there anyway.Giustinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04756707910693785516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24528000.post-17700029467612581392007-07-03T10:05:00.000+00:002007-07-03T10:05:00.000+00:00Colleen,When you figure out how to create a harmon...Colleen,

When you figure out how to create a harmonious society inoffensive to minorities, please let us know. Even in Sweden the minorities felt sufficiently opressed for a Balkan youth to kill a government minister.

While I can see where people are coming from re: Russia not really caring about Estonia, and sometimes I force myself into a sanity check about this, the thing that's difficult to comprehend from Western Europe is that Russia's collective mindset simply doesn't work in the same way as yours. Russia may not have the military capability today to take on NATO, or even the Baltic Brigade - after all, we did beat them in 1918-20 - but in terms of political will and historical practices, there is nothing unfeasible about Russia rolling over Estonia just because we looked at them wrong.

Estonia's wariness towards Russia is mired in the historical fact that we have, before, ignored Russia's growing agression at our own peril - and at least in the more recent instance, Western Europe left us to rot.antyxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06567309109757565293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24528000.post-62277571040907562962007-07-02T10:03:00.000+00:002007-07-02T10:03:00.000+00:00And even worse: German politicians use Russian age...And even worse: German politicians use Russian agency news as source about Estonia, like Schroeder did obvisiously. But were there information for German media from the Estonian side? Not really during the bronze soldier crisis. Even in English it was too less. The result: Even blogger sympathizing with Estonia recently were repeating that the Soviet soldier was moved to some (unspecific) graveyard. That it was a cemetery that actually is very important to Estonian military and Soviet forces only a few mentioned it in their posts.Jens-Olafhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18304784095687896639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24528000.post-33058490003113744222007-07-02T00:50:00.000+00:002007-07-02T00:50:00.000+00:00Are you reporting the facts or pushing some agenda...Are you reporting the facts or pushing some agenda?

I see myself as someone who lives in Estonia that enjoys living there and considers Russian "news" about Estonia to be frighteningly untrue. It's like they are constantly whipping people up about one country or another, but come to Estonia. It's totally normal. It's a Western country. Why the emotions run high in Russia is beyond me. I mean Estonia was polled as the "greatest enemy of Russia." Are the people there that, forgive me, DUMB, to think that 1.3 million people pose any threat to them whatsoever?Giustinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04756707910693785516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24528000.post-57262312890719313172007-06-29T23:40:00.000+00:002007-06-29T23:40:00.000+00:00Well, you are advising Estonians on "national secu...Well, you are advising Estonians on "national security", "information war" etc
But what about you? Do you consider yourself an objestive reporter or a soldier (considering your position, an officer) in the trenches of information war? Otherwise, cycle-of-violence, Middle-East syndrome. Nobody "really" wins.

Look, Russia holds a lot of cards - money and energy are two of them, worldwide resentment of America is a third, and growing Russian nationalism is a fourth. Putting this all together and remembering that the national sport of Russia is chess bodes an enormous challenge to anyone wishing to confront Russia... assuming Russia wishes to retaliate against this someone.

In the case of Estonia, I actually don't think that Russia will retaliate at all (unless Estonian troops cross the border :)) and will simply let Estonians yap and yap and let the free markets play their role (supermarkets and consumers starting boycotts, tourists going elsewhere, etc.).

I really don't think Estonia is something Russia worries much about in the end of the day.Colleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12248791977170347491noreply@blogger.com
